Dining by Chao Phraya River – Supatra River House, Bangkok

Bangkok is food city and you will find many wonderful restaurants and pubs stiuated on the river banks of Chao Phraya offering excellent food and music in view of the bright lights and nightlife of Bangkok. Set alongside the magnificent temples, old warehouses, wooden stilt houses and old buildings, Supatra River House is a traditional Thai seafood restaurant across the Grand Palace with a view overlooking the magnificent Chao Phraya River.

This two-storey traditional Thai house was formerly the home of Khunying Supatra Singholaga, a well respected and successful business lady in Thai society. She was also the founder of the famous Chao Phraya River ferry company. Many years later, her eldest daughter khun Supapan decided to convert the Supatra River House into a first-class restaurant in 1998. Up till now, the restaurant has won many awards and distinctions and has attracted many famous diners – including Japanese Prince Akishino.

Blessed by a cool breeze, the Terrace offers a scenic change to Bangkok’s inner-city stuffiness. It is a perfect setting for a romantic dinner under the stars. Baan Thai, two-storey house, fully air-conditioned is a great fine dining choice and also Baan Khun Ying is a wonderful place to meet friends, have drinks or share a wonderful meal. The interior is tastefully furnished for the comfort of all guests.

Supatra River House offers an extensive menu of authentic Thai cuisine for your dining pleasure. The a la carte menu offers a fine selection of authentic Thai seafood dishes such as shrimps or crab salads, the famous Tom Yum Goong and Fried River Prawn with Tamarind sauce priced at around 120-750 baht.

Supatra River House is easily accessible from both sides of the river. Either you can catch the complementary ferry service from Maha Raj ferry pier at Maharaj or if you are on Thonburi side you can reach the restaurant via the small lane name Trok Wat Rakhang.

If you are a jazz lover, Brown Sugar Pub and Restaurant is a place for you to experience the vibrant Bangkok’s night entertainment scene. The small jazz club is located in a shophouse with a minuscule stage, has been graced by some formidable jazz musicians both local and international since 1985.

It has a rustic feel and plays live Jazz and blues music nightly from around 8pm – 1am. The pub also offers a good selection of Thai favourite dishes and bar snacks where a jug of beer costs only 450 THB (S$19.50) and the staff are pretty polite and nice.

Brown Sugar is one of Bangkok’s best known jazz club frequented by both locals and expatriates and it is conveniently located on Sarasin Road on the north side of Lumpini Park. The place is packed with jazz aficionados of all ages so be there early.
