Paper offerings – Thailand Hungry Ghost Festival

Do you know that the Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan (Por Toh) Festival is an important merit-making event for the ethnic Chinese in Thailand. Since ancient times, the Chinese believe that the gates of hell are open between the 1st and 30th day of the Chinese lunar 7th month. During this period hungry ghost are allowed to wander on earth to look for food. People made offerings to the ghost in the form of special food, flowers, paper money and candles to please the beings. All the Chinese Shrines in Thailand have their own Hungry Ghost Festival celebrations.

This year, the Hungry Ghost Festival starts from August 10th and ends on September 7th. The festival celebration is underway in Poh Teck Tung Foundation, the place where people go to donate coffins located in Bangkok’s Chinatown (Yaowarat). It is interesting to note what do people donate to accuminate good Karma for present and next life:

  • Rice symbolising that you will always have abundant food to eat
  • Noodle symbolising long live

Events in Bangkok – Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2010 – India Heads The List

Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2009 Opening Reception

The Thailand Travel Mart Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (TTM+ 2010) will be held from 8 – 10 September 2010, at the IMPACT Convention Center (Hall 9), Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok.

The most important development this year is the changing mix of buyers. For the first time, buyers from India will head the list. At last count, 70 buyers from all over India, representing many different emerging customer niche-markets such as weddings and Bollywood productions. They are among 341 buyers from 49 countries registered. Apart from India, the other large buyer delegates are from the USA (26), United Kingdom (24), Russia (22), and Korea (16) and as well as new buyers from Brazil, Mexico, UAE, Turkey, Lithuania, and Kazakhstan.

The buyers will be meeting with 428 registered sellers from various business categories such as hotels and resorts, tour operators and travel agents, eco and adventure, wellness and spa, airlines, entertainment/theme parks/culture products, golf courses, associations, other travel services and the Greater Mekong Subregion/ NTOs.

According to TAT Governor Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, “This year’s TTM Plus is very important for us because it comes as part of our recovery programme from the recent political unrest. It is also part of our strategy to diversify the sources of visitor arrivals and expose Thailand and the GMS region to new buyers from countries and regions which could deliver promising results in the future.”

From 11 September onwards, several complimentary post-tours are being organised by TAT and the private sector to take buyers and the media to Thailand’s world-renowned natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

The Thailand Travel Mart Plus is the country’s premier annual trade event designed to promote travel and tourism to Thailand and its neighbours in the Greater Mekong Subregion. One of the primary objectives of the TTM Plus is to provide a platform for Thailand’s small and medium sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) to find a market for their products and services on the international stage.

Events in Thailand – Eight Special Events Organised By TAT To Bring Back The Smile to Thailand

Thailand Smiles Again

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will organise eight special events starting this weekend around the theme of the famous Thai smile. The activity is expected to help restore the liveliness of the Thai capital and the provincial areas, rebuild confidence among foreign tourists and promote domestic tourism.

Smile @ Siam will be held at Bangkok’s Siam Square shopping district and adjacent areas

  • Smile @ Siam will be held from 14 to 15 August 2010 during 10.00-22.00 hrs at Bangkok’s Siam Square shopping district and adjacent areas. It will be a golden opportunity for shoppers to purchase brand name products at discounted prices. Many entertainment performances will be held at four main stages at Siam Square Soi 3, Siam Paragon Shopping Complex, Siam Center and MBK Center.

1st Smile in the Park (Musical in the Park) will be held at Lumpini Park

  • 1st Smile in the Park (Musical in the Park) will be held from 21 to 22 August 2010 during 11.00-21.00 hrs at Lumpini Park, Bangkok.

International Taste 2010 Amazing Thailand will be held at Fountain Courtyard, Siam Paragon, Bangkok

  • International Taste 2010 Amazing Thailand will be held from 10 to 12 September 2010 at Fountain Courtyard, Siam Paragon, Bangkok.

  • Smile@Khao San Road which will be held from 11 to 12 September 2010 during 16.00-24.00 hrs at the popular backpacker area Khao San Road and Soi Rambudtree, Bangkok.
  • 2nd Smile in the Park (Musical in the Park) will be held from 18 to 19 September 2010 during 11.00-21.00 hrs at Benjakitti Park, Bangkok.
  • Thai Tourism Festival @Udon Thani will be held from 27 to 29 August 2010 during 11.00-23.00 hrs at UD Town, Udon Thani province.
  • Thai Tourism Festival @Surat Thani will be held from 3 to 5 September 2010 during 11.00-22.00 hrs at Surat Thani Cooperative Office, Punpin district in Surat Thani.
  • Thai Tourism Festival @Suphan Buri, which will be held from 24 to 26 September 2010, during 10.00-22.00 hrs at Suphan Buri Provincial Stadium in Suphan Buri.

The events in the three provinces is aimed at boosting domestic tourism between the regions and contributing to a better distribution of tourism income across the country.
